Problem is I've gotten some quests, but most of them require me to go into the outside parts where the guards say I don't have enough experience to competently fight

Divinity: Original Sin EE - Achievement Savegames By Joschi Guide with Savegames for mainly Sister of Mercy, Father Lucifer and the difficulties for those who missed and / or don't feel like going through the game multiple times for the 100%.
When it happens again, look at what program is now active. Whichever application disrupted the game may have focus. If you can't figure it out that way, task kill an open program then go back into the game. If it happens again, kill another and keep doing that until you figure out what app is dropping your game. #1.
